The Foundation

Pete Rose hustled for baseball – and now he’s hustling for his Foundation, HUSTLE FOR HEROES.

This Foundation helps military veterans find jobs and get the healthcare they need. Pete’s proceeds from the wine sales will help fund the Foundation.

In fact, the back of each wine bottle has the following quote from Pete. “We lose 22 vets each day to suicide in this Country. Unacceptable. Let’s rally around our vets, not around me. That’s why I’m donating my proceeds from the purchase of this product to www.HustleforHeroes.com”

How did Pete Rose get the nickname, “Charlie Hustle” – which inspired the name, “Hustle for Heroes?

First of all, one needs to know that Pete hustled every time he played the game. His intensity to win meant constant practicing and the desire to be the best at whatever position he played. He would run after a home run, even if it was long gone. He would run to first base after drawing a walk, instead of jogging.

Pete says that his nickname was given to him when he was trying out for the Reds in 1963.

Yankee greats Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle were pretty impressed with all the hustling he did on the field that day. Ford said to Mantle, “Did you see that? Charlie Hustle beat us today!”

Pete says, “The next day in the New York paper it said, ‘Charlie Hustle Beats the Yanks’ My name was created at that time. And about 3 weeks later, I ended up making the Reds for the first time.”
